  • Pandora’s box is an artifact in Greek mythology connected with the myth of Pandora in Hesiod’s Works and Days.
  • The story of Pandoras box starts with Zeus. Zeus rewarded Prometheus and Epimetheus for their loyalty and gave them the job of creating the first creatures to live on Earth. Promehteus made someone, but wanted him to have protection, so he asked Zeus to let him have fire. Zeus refused, stating fire was only for the gods. Prometheus ignored him and gave him it anyways. Zeus found out and chained him far away on a rock and had a bird eat his liver, just for it to grow back the next day. Eventually Prometheus was released. Zeus decided this punishment was not enough. He decided to punish humans for accepting fire. Zeus created Pandora to marry Epimetheus, and on their wedding day, Zeus got Pandora a box, but warned her not to open it. To nobodies surprised, Pandora opened the box and greed, envy, hatred, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, and death flew out of it. The only thing that stayed in the box was hope, and ever since that, humans have been able to hold onto hope to survive the wickedness Pandora let out. The “moral” of the story to many people is that anything that is best should remain untouched, for fear of what might come out of it.
