The Hydra is a Greek mythological monster. According to Greek legends it was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. The hydra was a huge snake like monster with nine heads.

The beast lived in the marshes of Lerna, near Argos. Anyone who fought the Hydra would find that if you cut off one of it head, two more heads would appear. The Hydra was taken on by Hercules and his nephew Lolaus. Hercules found out a way to kill it, by Hercules cutting off one of the heads, while Lolaus would burn the neck, so that a new head would not appear. The Hydra became one of the 12 labors of Hercules (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica).
