Has science failed us? Or did we fail science?

Why I believe that we, the people, haven’t supported science.

OK, maybe “fail” is not the right word. It’s just that I have high expectations from science and it feels that something is getting in the way of progress and innovation.

And when I say innovation, I don’t mean stupid phones with curved displays or fingerprint readers. I mean life changing inventions and discoveries that will affect the entire world. I’m talking about:

  • Renewable resource
  • Fusion
  • Teleportation
  • Immortality
  • Flying cars
  • Space travel
  • Cures of fatal diseases (cancer, HIV etc)

I don’t believe that we invest on research around these areas, as much as we should. And I don’t understand why not.

And then I read that FB bought WhatsApp for 19 billion dollars. 19 billion! That amount could have helped the research for fighting starvation in under developed countries. It could have helped on the research for fighting Alzheimer’s disease. But no. FB bought a fucking chat app. Nothing life changing. Just a fucking app.

Then you have medical companies fighting cures and progress because it will minimise their profits. If cancer or HIV is around, they can sell their super expensive medication and treatments.

Another thing that bugs me a lot is that we’ve walked on the moon ~40 years ago and that was it. How about making it possible to have a day trip to the moon whenever you want?

Public education struggles because countries (after a lot of lobbying and pressure) decide to reduce the money that go into public education. This allows for certain “people” to bash public eduction and say that it doesn’t work. Thus, it’s better to go to a private school. But what that does, is limiting the amount of people who are given the opportunity to excel and help build our future. And that is because only the few with money will be able to study.

This is the world we live in. And we are to blame. Instead of pushing our countries to invest more money and resources to make our lives better and easier, we are just happy that the new iPhone is going to have a bigger screen. Who gives a fuck? That doesn’t change the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that it is not innovation to have curved displays. It takes skills and hard work to make this happen. I just thing that when we exhaust our natural resources, a curved display won’t help us.

Like I said, something is getting in the way. There are research facilities that invent life changing shit! But we don’t give them the funds they need, maybe because what they are building is not as sexy as the new iPhone.

We should stop acting like spoiled brats and pursue the future that we deserve.
