The primary difference between the main guns of the Iowas and the preceding North Carolina and South Dakota classes was 5 calibres in length (yes, this did improve range and penetration). However, contrary to what is stated here, all three classes could fire the same shells, including the latest “super-heavy” AP rounds. Also there is no evidence to suggest that the Iowas guns had better penetrating power than the 18.1" of the Yamatos; if anything they were very similar at any given range, with the 18.1" having the slightest edge.
