SURAT THANI— Province of the day

Surat Thani or usually Surat, is the gateway to the heavenly attain status of beach party, where people from all over the world comes to the FULL MOON PARTY.

NOT.

Surat is actually more than just that.

I do not deny that Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan & Koh Samui is super awesome. Trust me, you have to go there once in your life. But lets leave it for the next time on the Chapters on Thai Islands. Fingers crossed.

Where is Surat?
Surat is the Southern largest Province in Thailand. And if you could not make up where is the South of Thailand, just think of Phuket and Krabi, there you go!
Surat has the title on ‘City of Good People’, which was given by King Rama VI. The current monarch of Thailand is King Rama IX.

Secretly, Surat Thani prompted me on a self-desire journey to find the truest ‘City of Good People’ throughout the Provinces in Thailand.

So, other than the gateway to the beautiful islands in the Gulf of Thailand, what else are the little things in Surat?

The Airport

Fly by Nok Air, Surat Thani International Airport

If you have not been to other places in Thailand, probably you didn’t know that most parts in Thailand, the airports are pretty small. It is not nearly as grand as Suvarnabhumi Airport and some are even smaller than Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.

It was raining that day with Nok Air, great experience.

So yeah, we walked, literally. You don’t need a bus to bring you to the luggage belt. Period.

The Southern food

Big lovers of Thai food, be warned. Let me tell you something, do not think that you had tasted all the Thai food in Thailand. What you usually had was just Central Thai food, or we call it Ahan Paak Glaang ( อาหารภาคกลาง) which usually are the ones you will have in Bangkok.
For example on your favorites are, Basil Minced Chicken, Tom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Green Curry and many more.

BUT SOUTHERN FOOD IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL.

If you are Asian prolly you will love it more than the Central Thai food you usually have. TRUST ME.

Stink Beans, but totally not stinky at all! ‘Gaeng sataw’(Left), One of my must eat favourites, ‘Pad pak Mieng Sai Khai’(Centre), Fried Chicken Southern Style ‘Kai Thod Kamin’(Right)
Ever wondered why some of them offer you raw veggie? It is actually a southen dish call ‘Nam Prik Makam’. Dip it with the Chilli Paste. It is DELICIOUS.

Disclaimer: All pictures are not owned by me.
I was too hungry to take pictures. 555! Oops!

Surat is still one of the Southern province where you can find affordable and nice southern food unlike in Phuket and Krabi. But we will get into them later on.

Okay, I guess I have made my point across on how tempting Southern Thai food is with all the intros and pictures. (You guys probably thought it is turning into a food blog.)

But hey!

Do you know that the most interesting is that the RICE cooked in Southern, Central and Northern is different!

I bet you didn’t!

Heh, so go ahead, try it yourself and tell me which and why the rice is different. THE RICE, PERIOD.

Surat City

The Longest River in the Southern Provinces, Tapi River

Interesting fact : It was name Tapi River exactly like the India ‘Tapi River’ due to the fact that Surat Thani is also named after the India Town ‘Surat’. Hoho.

A smaller version of Bangkok Yaowarat Sampheng
Another view across the riverbank, Tapi River

As you can see it is a serene town where you can bask in the warm welcomeness of the Thai locals & being the most important part of a traveler, you could be like local, live like local & enjoy the culture as true as possible isn't it?

The pier to catch the ferry to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao for the FULL MOON PARTY

So the next time when you go to the FULL MOON PARTY don’t just skip this town, experience Surat Thani and let me know what else I missed and you experience!

Before i end, I want to shout out to my friends, พี้เจฟ(Jeff) who was once the 3rd Ukulele Champion of Thailand. Check out his youtube link here. And พี้อร(On) who was travelling with me when i was in Surat Thani.

Thank you!
