The Fine Art of The Bushwick Collective Lives on the Streets
You might think that a mashup between Raphael and Keith Haring couldn’t work but the New Zealand artist Owen Dippie has proved otherwise on Jefferson Street in Bushwick. Owen’s Radiant Madonna, a combination of Raphael’s Madonna dell Granduca and Keith Haring’s Radiant Baby, is just one of many murals showcased for The Bushwick Collective — a street art project founded and curated by Joe Ficalora that invites artists from all over the world to contribute murals to the neighborhood. Most of the murals live on Jefferson and Troutman Streets between Cypress and Knickerbocker, quickly seen once you step out of the Jefferson Street subway stop.
Some of the murals are absolutely stunning, like Jorit Agoch’s portrait (part of his hUman Tribe series) on St. Nicholas Avenue which is reminiscent of getting to see a Chuck Close painting for the first time. You will also see classic New York street artists like Buff Monster and Jerkface sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. These Bushwick walls are worth spending an afternoon exploring no matter what part of the city you live in. Keep up with all of Bushwick Collective’s latest work over on instagram.
