Deadlines for 9/11 Victim Compensation Claims: 4 Things You Need to Know
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) was established to provide relief and resources for those who are suffering because of a 9/11-related illness or injury. However, you could lose your right to compensation you may otherwise be eligible for if you miss the deadline that applies to your claim.

Here are four critical things you need to know about the deadlines for 9/11 victim compensation claims:
1. General VCF Deadlines: Two-Years from Determination That Illness Was 9/11-Related
Generally, a registration for VCF compensation is considered timely if it was submitted within two years of the date on which the claimant knew or reasonably should have known:
· that the victim suffered a physical harm because of the 9/11 attacks, or debris removal in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, and
· that the claimant was eligible to file a claim with the VCF.
For most claims, the VCF will use the date on which a federal, state, or local government entity determined that a physical injury or medical condition was 9/11-related as the date when the clock starts running on the two-year registration deadline. This means the date that either (i) the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) “certified” a cancer or other condition, or (ii) the date that a state workers’ compensation board or a government employer (such as the FDNY, NYPD, or NYCERS) found a condition as 9/11-related for purposes of awarding a disability pension.
If registration is timely for any condition, illness or injury, any other eligible conditions that are later determined to be 9/11-related (regardless of whether there had been a prior timely registration for the later-discovered condition) will be considered timely and eligible for an award of compensation from the fund. In other words, a timely registration for one eligible condition is a timely registration for all eligible conditions that are discovered or develop later.
2. There are Different Filing Deadlines for Different Circumstances
You must register with the VCF by the deadline that applies to your particular situation as found in this list of VCF registration and claim filing deadlines. By timely registering your claim with the VCF, you preserve your right to file a claim with the VCF in the future, but no later than December 18, 2020.
3. Missing the October 2013 Registration Deadline May Not Be a Problem
The VCF established an October 3, 2013 registration deadline for those individuals who knew on or before October 3, 2011 that their condition was related to 9/11, as determined by the WTC Health Program or another government entity. But if you didn’t learn that your condition was 9/11-related until after October 3, 2011, the October 3, 2013 deadline does not apply to you and you can still register your claim.
Additionally, the October 3, 2013 deadline does not apply to those who have a 9/11-related condition that was added to the list of eligible conditions after October 3, 2011.
4. How to Register Your Claim for 9/11 Compensation
To register your claim with the VCF you must do one of the following:
· Use the online system to submit your Registration Form.
· Call the VCF Helpline at 1–855–885–1555 to register by phone.
