Priam: Greek Mythology
Priam
Priam is the son of Trojan king Laomedon and Strymo, or Rhoeo, Placia, Thoosa, Zeuxippe, or Leucippe (she has a lot of names). Priam is most know for being the last King of Troy when the greeks launched the attack against his city, known at the Trojan War. Priam’s birth name is actually Podarces, while researching I found 2 versions of why his named was changed: 1. Laomedon promised Hercules his daughter Hesione, however he broke that promise and in return Hercules murdered all of Laomedons sons except Podareces, who was sold as a slave. Hesione brought her brother to the slave market and changed his name. 2. The only reason why Piam was alive was because he gave Hercules a golden veil that was made by his sister. He then changed his name due to the fear of Hercules finding him after these events.
Family Tree:
Priam’s biggest strength and weakness is his sympathy and big heart. He is also very kinky and many wives; he is the father to over 50 children. He is somewhat of a doormat when it comes to his children, (letting them always have their way) however, his love for his sons is ultimately what makes him a hero in the end.
After one of his sons Hector, who was the greatest fighter for Troy in the Battle of Troy, was murdered by Achilles when fighting in the war, he was devastated like most fathers are. He then confronted Achilles unarmed begging him for his sons body back, Achilles initially refused but then seeing Priam break into tears and claim “he suffered more than anyone on earth.” he sent the body back to the Trojans and agreed on a ninety so there could be a funeral.
Battle of Troy:
Priam can also be reasoned with why the battle actually started. Others around him suggested that Priam should have his son Paris give back Helen, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta. Priam figured that if Paris was happy, then he should be happy.
Priam in Culture Today:
Troy: Fall of a City is a television serious based of the events on the Battle of Troy. Since Priam was the last ruler of Troy and the father of Paris, he is featured in the series. He is played by the actor David Threlfall.
