15 ways to hack the Instagram Gallery feature to increase engagement
Make your feed look pretty fly for a WiFi
As many of you have probably already noticed, Instagram has introduced a new feature, the gallery. Since February 22, you can share up to 10 photos and videos in one post on Instagram. With this update, you no longer have to choose the single best photo or video from an experience you want to remember. These posts have a single caption and are square-only (at least for now).
At Gram To Grands, we teach how you make over $5000 in passive income on Instagram every month. Understandably, engagement — increasing engagement-is a key part of this. So, fortunately, there are some really effective ways to use the Gallery feature to increase engagement.
Check out the amazing examples and ideas below that will help YOU to increase Instagram followers and their engagement.
1. The Special Experience
Use the gallery feature, when you want to share a very special day. It may be an exiting experience you had with your best friends, a birthday, a concert, a fashion show or a short trip. What we find important is that you don’t just post pictures of the same frame with minimal alterations — instead use the feature to show a variety of pictures, videos and boomerangs you took during the whole day/night/short-trip.
Let’s look at an example.
@KylieJenner posted a gallery to capture “adventure w the fam”. We like this example because Kylie selected a variety of well-chosen and high quality photographs of a day at the zoo. Moreover, she dedicated the post to her friend to wish her a happy pre birthday.
2. The Panorama Picture
Instagram galleries are a great way to post panorama pictures. (Of course you have to cut these panoramas up first). What makes posting wide view frames even more amazing is the fact that images connect perfectly when swiping through. Moreover, using such a concept encourages your followers to concentrate more on the details of the photograph. It is important, however, that these panoramas are high quality and that the first frame is intriguing enough for your followers to #Swipeleft.
The @GoPro account has mastered this way of using the feature.
In this first example we love the gradual shift of lighting.
Below you see a great example of an intriguing first frame. The cropped shark tale plays on the curiosity of your followers and encourages them to swipe left. Plus the first frame looks amazing by itself within the Instagram homepage gallery.
3. Recipes / Foooooood
For all Foodies out there, now you can share the whole process of your amazingly delicious creations. Weather you choose to share the actual recipe in the caption or just desire to showcase your creation — it’s up to you! Just bare in mind, that you can use Videos, Pictures and Boomerangs in one post. If you are a professional chef, this is a great way to conduct Instagram marketing for your business.
The example below comes from the creator itself @Instagram. We love that the post consists of all possible media (boomerang, picture, video).
4. The Outfit Post — Fashion Bloggers Listen Up!
We all know the difficulty of choosing only one picture of an outfit. You start your day with a breakfast at this cute coffee place, continue with a memorable walk trough your sunny city, after you go for lunch at your favorite vegetarian restaurant (or for the most fancy burger in town) until you go back home. Obviously, during the course of the day you took about 100 amazing pictures and boomerangs — but which will you choose to post? The answer is a maximum of 10, without spamming the newsfeed of your followers.
We suggest choosing one picture of each location. @Natalyosmann does it right. She posts the same outfit during different stages of the day, with different accessories and close-ups. The only thing she could do better, is to vary between photographs and boomerangs in order to make her post even more exiting.
Furthermore, use the gallery feature to post different close-ups of your outfit. This might not be the most creative use of the feature but it again prevents you from spamming your followers’ news feed.
5. The Humorous Post
Do you enjoy posting a joke? The gallery feature may just be what you have been looking for. You can create suspense, tell a funny story with pictures or create a comic post by using snap chat.
Check out the examples from @9gag:
This example shows how you can create suspense. The guy looks like the biggest badass alive until…
6. The Artsy Post
For those of you who are using Instagram as a tool to express your artistic personality, here are some ideas to make your news feed stand out.
An Instagram gallery gives you the opportunity to create amazing posts, if you’re able to use Photoshop, even more so. But don’t worry if you don’t, having a creative eye is more than enough!
First of all, you may have the possibility to post up to 10 images or videos, but you don’t have to! Sometimes posting a minimum of only two amazing images can be enough for your followers to literally stop and stare!
A great example for this comes from the Italian rapper @Dennylahome. He took a horizontal portrait shot that is lit from one side only. He managed to create almost the feel of a split personality, because he used the new Instagram gallery feature. His caption reads “la verità sta nel mezzo” which means as much as “the truth lies in the middle”
The second example comes again from the master @Instagram itself and is a great specimen of a post that was created with Photoshop.
7. The Collage Within A Collage
Another cool way to use the gallery update is to create a collage within a collage. How, you may wonder. It’s a fairly easy approach that has great impact and it looks great! All you have to do is create a collage using your Computer or a Smartphone app. Select the entire collage for your first image and post zoomed frames of the collage as sequent pictures — and Voilà, done!
Check out the example of @Quiksilver to get a better idea.
8. The Sport & Sport Event Post
Are you a Motorsports fan or do you prefer riding waves — it doesn’t matter! Whatever sport you may practice or enjoy watching, here are some ideas of how to share your experience with your friends and followers.
There are two key points to keep in mind. Do not post the same jump or the same video (with different participants) over and over again, that might become boring. We can’t stress it enough; use videos, pictures and boomerangs in the same post! Secondly, choose high quality images; if you use your smartphone make sure the image is not pixilated (don’t use the zoom function too much).
The best example for this section and the gallery feature as a whole comes from @wsl (World Surf League). They have been the only account we found, who really managed to use the feature to their advantage.
We loved that within the posts they used Pictures, Videos, compilations of great waves AND quotes to create an experience and an emotional bond with their viewers.
They also added a promotional picture at the end of each gallery to promote the WSL Awards, their Facebook page as well as their homepage. What a great idea to promote your business through Instagram marketing.
We must say WELL DONE WSL we are definitely going to watch the WSL awards now!
9. The Fitness Post
Being Healthy and Fit is a major trend since a couple of years. Thus, we are not surprised that there are new Fitness Bloggers on Instagram everyday. If you are already a Fitness Blogger or considering becoming one, the following Gallery advice concerns YOU.
So far most fitness posts are made of either edited videos, one exercise per post or a video collage. The new Instagram Gallery feature will make your own life and the life of your followers much easier. This is because now you can showcase your workout one exercise after another in the same post. This way (presumed you are used to post edited workout videos) your followers can switch to the exercise they actually want to do, instead of having to search for the wanted passage. Furthermore, using this new feature, your exercises videos will be much more in detail, than they were before. Thus, your followers have a clearer view of how the exercise is performed correctly. And lastly, you don’t spam your followers by posting too many single posts.
This example comes from Spanish fitness blogger Clara Divano (@cusifit). She doesn’t use the Gallery function yet, but we believe that the image below will make you understand why she should (the videos are too small and show little detail due to their size, using the gallery update would resolve this problem).
10. The “Beautiful Cover Image” Product Post
Weather you are a beauty blogger or are looking to conduct Instagram marketing for your brand, creating this type of product post will be your new addiction. It is a great way to advertise your brand or to promote others (in case you’re a blogger or influencer). Furthermore, you won’t spoil your Homepage gallery with unflattering product images.
Select a flattering cover picture (i.e. Beauty picture if you want to promote makeup or beauty products) and continue to select actual images of the products you used. (Example by @Obviousmag)
11. The Interview Post
If you wish to conduct Instagram marketing for your business or simply desire to increase Instagram engagement, making short Interviews is a great way to do so. These Interviews could involve people from the street answering questions about your product, ordinary people sharing incredible stories or (if you manage), celebrities.
Once you have conducted these question and answer sessions and have edited them (if needed), select one after the other using the new gallery feature. Watch out that each gallery post has the same mood and that Interviews are left short and interesting.
A great example comes from the @Voguemagazine account. They used the Instagram gallery feature to capture the amazing Gucci fashion show during Milan Fashion Week. They used a variety of videos to communicate the full experience. These videos mainly included Interviews, asking celebrities of their perception of Gucci, but also a video of the Backstage, the fashion shows itself and one capturing the overall mood. What we especially love is the same music seemingly continues through the gallery, recreating the mood of the fashion show.
12. The Emotional Post
The new Instagram gallery feature is also a wonderful way to show emotion. Weather you make various selfies portraying different moods or create a sort of story — it all works! Important is that you use a good caption of gallery post and choose coherent images.
Below you can see an example of a snap chat created gallery, portraying “The 4 looks of breaking up”, posted by @9gag.
We think this caption is great as it “says it all” — also the post is very funny. The only thing we would do better, is to edit the pictures a bit more or use a more flattering filter. In the end you want your home page gallery to be slayin’.
13. The Flipbook
We would also like to share the idea of creating a sort of flipbook, even though we couldn’t find an example on Instagram YET. We believe this to be a great way to increase your Instagram post engagement, as it is such a funny and original post idea. If you love to draw, this is THE post for you. Find or draw an illustrated story (remember maximum 10 frames), cut into pieces and select these using the new gallery feature — done! Check out the example below to get an overall idea!
14. The Action Shot
Many sports have to do with movement. Capturing those movements has become much easier over the years. We have a multiple picture function on our smartphones as well as on every digital camera. It is exactly this function that will help you create memorable posts. The idea is to take a multi-frame shot that shows a movement and post these images one after another in your Instagram gallery. Please keep in mind that you can only use 10 frames in one gallery — and make sure the images have high resolution.
This set of examples was taken from the stunning @Redbull Instagram account. This is an amazing take on how to post a moving picture (To create something similar you probably need some Photoshop skills).
15. The “Cut-Up” Product Post
This concept of Instagram product marketing only works if the item is more long than wide. In this case, it can be used in a number of different fields (Lip gloss, tools, baseball bat etc.) Basically, you want to take a photograph (you may need to crop the top and the bottom) and cut it into multiple square pieces. Similar, as you would do with a panorama image. Then select one cropped imaged after another, so when sliding through the gallery it connects perfectly.
What we like about the following example is the subtle indication within the first image to #SwipeLeft
To sum up the most important aspects to remember when creating an Instagram gallery post:
- Don’s hesitate to use all available types of media (Video, Boomerang & Images) within one gallery post
- DO NOT post a series of similar pictures unless the sequent images are funny versions of the cover image or you are Selena Gomez
- If you are posting videos where the sound is not important, consider having a song run though as you #SwipeLeft.
- Sometimes less is more
- Be creative — creativity will be appreciated by your followers
- The gallery is a great tool to stop spamming your follower’s news feed — USE IT
