5 Questions to Ask Your Gynaecologist About Uterine Fibroids

You probably have a lot of questions to ask about uterine fibroids and what the best treatments are. Going to your gynaecologist with a list of questions may help you organise your thoughts so that you can be well informed about your options before you make a decision on the next course of action.
1. Do I Need Treatment?
Having Uterine fibroids can go two ways: they can either be completely asymptomatic or they can cause severe pain, loss of blood and significantly affect quality of life. Having fibroids does not necessarily mean that they have to be treated. Your gynaecologist will inform you if the symptoms you present are related to fibroids and if they are significant enough to seek treatment.
2. What Are My Options?
There are a variety of treatment options, but not all of them require surgery. Your gynaecologist will advise you on which options may be right for you.
3. What Are the Chances the Fibroids Return After Treatment?
It may be important to know if you are going to be faced with having to make another treatment decision in the future.
4. Are the Fibroids Hurting my Chances of Getting Pregnant?
Having uterine fibroids can play a role in the ability of a woman to have a successful pregnancy. Your gynaecologist will let you know if the fibroids are making it more difficult for you to get pregnant.
5. What Treatment is the Best Option for Me?
While the final decision on which treatment option to pursue is ultimately yours, you should feel free to ask for your gynaecologist’s opinion. They will consider your symptoms, where the fibroids are, what your past experience with fibroids has been, and what your future plans are. Your gynaecologist knows your history with uterine fibroids and should be able to provide you with guidance on if you need treatment and what treatments are good options for you.
However, when in doubt, ask, remember your doctor isn’t there to judge you.
