April 13 — The Grind I
This job isn’t about writing. It’s about avoiding writing as much as possible. That’s how I do my job well. If I actually had to write 140 original descriptions each day I’d be brain-fried in a week. I’m no master of originality, but I’m becoming a master of efficiency. Like a blacksmith with a bar of metal, I can take a sentence and twist it, turn it, and reshape it to my purposes with as few of my own deft movements as possible.
How many possible sentences can be made using the terms playful, spirited, boho, trend-right, trend-forward, update, elevate, flaunt, flowing, lovely, feminine, curve-hugging, flirty, retro, vintage-inspired and flattering? From what I know of mathematics the number is probably quite high, but by now I’d wager I’ve started to approach it. How many times, I wonder, have I written the exact same sentence more than once — perhaps months apart — without even realizing it?
Back when I was interested in intelligent design theories I heard about how unlikely it was for the first, most simple life form to be spontaneously created. Put enough copywriters to work long enough (a step up from monkeys randomly pounding a typewriter, I grant you) and eventually I bet we’d type out that genetic code in the correct sequence.
