August 8 — Burdened

Joel’s comments are terse and pointed. I’m moving out in two weeks — a cruel and pathetically short time. We’ve lived together for nearly two years, and here at the end I’m stringing him out to dry. Sorry pal, moving to the Eastern Shore. Good luck with your wedding in three months and all that.

I’ve just explained what’s going to happen. I can’t read his thoughts, but I suspect he’s not thrilled.

“It’s my problem now,” he says.

I wish I had the presence of mind to retort. No, this is a problem of my doing too. This is a choice I made and it affects you, and I want to take responsibility for it, to bear the cost of making a quick decision.
