July 30 — On the steps of LOC
I sat down with Christy and Lauren to eat a picnic lunch on the steps of the Library of Congress building. We had an excellent view of the Capitol building.
I felt stretched into the future and pulled into the past. My mind drifted to the many conversations I’d had on these steps over the years — the night with Joel, Chelsea, Constance, Mimi, and Zach talking to the strange old man who struck up a conversation with us about DC’s architecture. Praying with Bryan and thinking about despair and sin. Part of me would always linger in DC. It had stamped me in some of my most formative years. I had become an adult on these steps.
Lauren and Christy were laughing as we counted how many chews it took to eat a bite of salad. Christy chugged the last of a bag of boozy watermelon juice and I took a video of it and sent it to the rest of the fellows. This would be our last trip into DC.
