Interesting note about the study that found the oddity in the Texas rate and the reduced California rate, it only broke out Texas and California because those were the only two states with a large enough population to have a stastically measurable maternal mortality rate. That is, maternal mortality is so rare in the US all the other states had to be grouped into regions to have a sample size large enough to measure. I completely agree that this doesn’t mean we should ignore the problem, but we should recognize that the media’s touting of the relative risk rather than the absolute risk is their go-to fear-mongering tactic that encourages us to panic and lurch for poor solutions.
