The Nobel Prize-Winning Chemist Who Changed Our Understanding of Earth’s Atmosphere
The name Mario Molina is synonymous with environmental science and the study of the Earth’s atmosphere. He was a Mexican chemist and Nobel Prize Laureate who revolutionized the world’s understanding of the atmosphere, ozone layer, and global warming.
Molina was born in Mexico City in 1943 and was educated at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1965 and his doctorate from the University of Freiburg in Germany in 1972.
Molina is best known for his work on the ozone layer, which he and his colleague, F. Sherwood Rowland, discovered could be damaged by human-made chemicals. This discovery led to the banning of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were commonly used in aerosol cans.
In 1995, Molina and Rowland were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on the ozone layer. The award was given in recognition of their efforts to explain the formation and decomposition of ozone in the atmosphere, as well as their work in alerting the public and political leaders to the dangers of CFCs.
Molina has since become a leading advocate for environmental protection, speaking out against deforestation, pollution, and other environmental issues. He is a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was appointed to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 2004.
