The Week Ahead: 14–17 January 2018
First Plenary session of the year in Strasbourg where ALDE MEPs lead many files as rapporteurs in several topics like economy or international trade. See our priorities below:
MEPs will debate on gender equality and taxation policies in the EU and autonomous driving in the European Transport, and vote on Tuesday.
MEP Nils Torvalds is rapporteur on tje annual report of the Banking Union which will be presented that evening and voted on Wednesday.
The EP will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Euro with a high level conference and an exhibition and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz will give the handover of the EU Presidency to Romania’s Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă.
MEPs are set to approve a new EU programme for investments called InvestEU which otherwise would have been difficult to make. The aim is to trigger almost €700 billion in investments during 2021–2027 to boost jobs and growth.
The Plenary will discuss establishing the ‘Customs’ programme for cooperation in the field of customs and establishing, as part of the Integrated Border Management Fund, the instrument for financial support for customs control equipment.
Employment MEPs will present to the hemicycle the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund and the European Social Fund Plus to improve the conditions of the sector.
Brexit will be getting all the attention as the Plenary will debate the state of play of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, one day after the UK House of Commons’ meaningful vote on 15 January.
Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez visits the Parliament in the monthly series of head of state presentations to discuss the Future of Europe with the plenary and our President Guy Verhofstadt.
Nuclear safety as a European instrument will be debated in Plenary with ALDE MEP Dominique Riquet as shadow rapporteur.
The hemicycle will vote on a report by ALDE MEP Marietje Schaake on the EU-Morocco Agreement within the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement and combating late payments in commercial transactions, an Internal Market report with MEP Jasenko Selimovic as shadow rapporteur.
