AO ArtBall serves up an expanded ’23 court, distributed randomly with Chainlink VRF
What’s AO ArtBall?
AO ArtBall is pioneering new ways to experience tennis.
Here’s how we’re keeping fans plugged into the many games taking place at the 2023 Australian Open.
Getting started is simple: Hold an AO ArtBall from the ’22 collection, or join in on this year’s fresh drop of 2454 NFTs. These NFTs are standalone art images and dynamic Match Point trackers, and give access to an elevated experience that keeps the ball rolling, both on and off the court.
By owning an AO ArtBall, you get an unprecedented level of tickets from premier tennis, sport, and entertainment events as well as unique rewards from leading web3 projects, covering both real worlds and virtual worlds.
Each ArtBall is also linked to a plot on Australian Open tennis courts. If a winning shot from any of the ~400 matches in the tournament lands on your ArtBall’s plot, a few things happen:
- Your NFT is updated in near real-time to highlight the match information.
- A 3D visualization of that winning point is provided to you
- A holographic sticker is attached to your ArtBall, showing it recorded a Match Point.
So keep an eye on your ArtBall to see if you register any Match Points. Some plots are more likely than others to change. If you have a plot that’s really close to the net, it’s unlikely that a ball will land there. That’s why, in the interest of fairness and transparency, we’ve randomized the plot assignments for ArtBalls using Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF).
In essence, Chainlink VRF gives ArtBall owners a guarantee that the randomness used to assign court plots is truly random and has not been tampered with. It’s provably fair.
Why randomness matters
Some randomness solutions used for blockchains can be manipulated, with their numbers able to be seen beforehand. Think of this like knowing what the lottery numbers will be before they’re drawn, or being able to tamper with the numbers so that they match your ticket. In either case, the process would no longer be random or fair.
Chainlink VRF provides a better method for obtaining randomness. It provides mathematical proof that nobody can predict or tamper with the random number it provides. So whenever we require randomness, we lean on Chainlink VRF because this results in a better, fairer user experience — the random distribution can’t be gamed.
ArtBall’s new court plots need to be randomly distributed
All AO22 and AO23 ArtBalls will be randomly allocated a new court position using Chainlink VRF for the 2023 Australian Open. This gives existing holders in less-desirable locations a fresh opportunity to secure match points from their new plot. This year, the ArtBall metaverse experience will include 3D Match Point visualizations and digitized match footage.
VRF will create a fair and enhanced Match Point experience
Chainlink VRF helps ensure two things:
- 9230 on the ’23 court are randomly allocated a new plot position
- 2454 new ’23 ArtBall NFTs are assigned artwork randomly
“We love that anyone can confirm their ArtBalls and court plots were fairly distributed — this is important to the entire project and our ethos,” said Adam De Cata, Run it Wild Founder & NFT Tech CEO
How can ArtBall members verify their NFT was distributed fairly?
VRF stands for “verifiable random function,” with the key word being “verifiable.” Any ArtBall holder can independently check that the randomness wasn’t manipulated for their image or their court plot.
The easiest way to validate the fairness of the NFT drop is to check your transactions through an Etherscan link or find the transaction information so that you can look up the minting event/transaction. Here is an example of how to check the most recent randomness fulfillments using the Chainlink VRF UI.
Users can see all recent fulfillments on the subscription and get a link to the Etherescan URL for further review.

Navigate to Etherscan via the Transaction Hash link provided in the VRF UI. Once you land on Etherscan, it’s possible to see the transaction logs. The logs will contain all of the relevant information about the request.
As an example, this fulfillRandomWords transaction shows the bytecode inputs to the fulfillment transaction. This is the proof data and request commitment submitted by the Chainlink oracle.
About Chainlink

About AO Metaverse
Serving a new way to experience sport. AO ArtBall exists at the intersection of sport and innovation, a membership that unlocks a new arena to keep fans in the game — on and off the court. Membership is accessible via AO ArtBall, a collection of 6776 NFTs from the ’22 collection and 9230 NFTs from ’23 collection, providing holders with an unprecedented level of tickets from premier tennis, sport, and entertainment events as well as unique rewards from leading Web3 projects, covering both real worlds and virtual worlds. Each ArtBall is linked to a plot on the court. If the winning shot from any of the ~400 AO matches lands on that plot, the ArtBall is updated in near real-time to highlight the match information, provide 3D visualisation of the Match Point and attach a holographic sticker to the ball casing showing it’s a Match Point ArtBall.
