Few players enjoyed as productive a 2016–17 campaign as Kevin Strootman.

After a few seasons derailed by well-documented injury problems, the midfielder put all that behind him as he played in an impressive 45 of Roma’s 54 games last term —in the process returning to his imperious best while helping the Giallorossi finish second in Serie A.

His fine form was rewarded at the end of the campaign, as he signed a new contract with the club until 2022. …

Act 1: The departure of coach Rudi Garcia

Jim Pallotta, Roma President: “Watching that winless run of 11 games when we had a good team, I found it to be a fairly easy decision, even though a number of people internally thought that we should wait until the end of the season. I felt that the team was mentally sinking fairly quickly. If we didn’t do something then, we would have no chance to be in the top five, never mind trying to get back into the Champions League, come the end of the season.”

Antonio Rudiger, Roma defender: “I was used to managers leaving and arriving because…

GIORNO 1

Day 1

I’m Lorenzo Di Livio and this is Day 1 of my AS Roma tour diary for Medium. Football is my passion and I hope that one day it could be my profession.

I like to play as a trequartista — the playmaker in midfield, behind the forwards. I’m still young, I’m 19, and I know I still need to improve my technical skills — and in that regard there is no better experience for me than going on this Roma tour of North America. This summer the coach Luciano Spalletti has already given me and other…

I was born on the 4 May 1988 in Antwerp, Belgium, the second biggest city of this small nation.

My mother is Belgian and my father is Indonesian, so for this reason I grew up with the desire to discover the great culture of these two very different countries, along with the understanding that the important thing is to cherish all cultures and their history across the globe and respect each and every person.

I’ve never felt alone in my life. I have a splendid twin sister, Riana who’s also a footballer.

My passion for football began when I was…

Totti, embarking on his 25th successive pre-season in a remarkable career, admits that such longevity means a lot to him — but is under no illusions about how hard coach Luciano Spalletti will work him and the rest of the squad as they prepare for the 2016–17 season.

The work starts this week in Pinzolo.

“It’s a special feeling,” Totti told asroma.com. “It’s also my 25th consecutive camp with the same team — which I don’t think many other players have done. That’s a great source of pride for me.”

On Spalletti’s famously arduous pre-seasons, he added: “I know what…
