I actually worked at Holy Cow! Press when we published this book. Brenda Ueland is a unique voice. This is an important essay of hers, and it needs to be understood in the context of 1971 feminism. To find the voice, there needed to be this anger against men — understood. What’s important is how much of this essay is actually pointing to patriarchy, which is a system damaging to men and women. It is, after all, damaged men who feel these needs to dominate women. For more healthy men, the struggle is to find and maintain awareness of the unconscious privilege we tend to enjoy at the expense of women. Now, forty years later, I can give a nod to the anger and resentment against the men, but also, we need to add the more recent thought that sees a bigger picture. Thanks for posting this.
