Week 4

Building, Testing (repeat)

Four weeks of whiteboard sketching, countless diagrams/frameworks, roleplaying activities have come to life thru an early set of prototypes. Nearly at halftime we’re confident our concept ‘freeing passengers from the gate’ is meaningful and opportunistic. Now comes the most difficult part. The part that separates first rate design responses from those who look back and begrudgingly state “I had that idea long, long ago.”
EXECUTION.

System Diagramming

Our concept video was extremely well received. Yay! Very few viewers had trouble understanding our goal but how we’d pull it off was less clear. Technology, access to testing locations, and other specific implementation questions arose so we spent time creating an initial system diagram. Using existing data sources (APIs) and devices as markers our diagram would inform ‘how’ the system would work.

This diagram represents our early understanding of technical feasibility. The system we’re proposing is complex and comprises of several data sources. Some already exist, while several others are to be created in one fashion or another for the final product. We expect this document to change considerably and become an important demonstration of our understanding how this project is feasible in the not too distant future.

Prototyping Interfaces & Scenario Creation

To inform the type of prototype we need for this stage of the project we worked backwards. We created a short list of questions to evaluate the different types of prototyping methods we’d practiced in the winter quarter. Keeping in mind that a prototype is a evaluation tool we settled on paper prototyping and lo-fi interactive mockups.

Irene creating an in environment mock-up. Build, build, build!!!

Research Activities: Card Sorting

As part of our ongoing research activities we prepared a card sorting activity aimed to better understand the specific information needs of our users. The cards consist of all information types we’ve identfied as potential inclusions, such as passenger name, exact boarding time, etc. In the coming days we will run the sort activities with recent travelers, classmates, and anyone else we can persuade to help.

All Work and No Play Makes the ATX team dull!

After studio the team ventured off campus and over to the UVillage music series for lemonades, mini-pork ribs, and some great (free) live music.
