Job Interviews

I haven’t written a post in awhile. It’s been a pretty hectic weekend and past couple days. Since I’ve been applying for jobs, I spent most of the weekend tidying up my GitHub repos. Two companies have been in contact with me for some preliminary interview-type steps. I had a pretty big coding challenge last night, and a phone interview this afternoon.

The coding challenge was pretty difficult. Essentially, I had data that contained two objects, which had a large amount of data in them. They were completely identical with the exception of the id’s (there were some nested id’s too). Also, not all of the arrays and objects within the identical objects were sorted in the same way. I had to write a JavaScript function that proved the two objects are identical, without hardcoding specific names of keys in the objects. I didn’t finish it last night like I wanted to, but I got very close. Fortunately, I was able to troubleshoot and fix my code first thing this morning! I uploaded it to GitHub and emailed it on to the company. Hopefully I’ll get some good news before too long.

We started Node this week. The prep work I’ve been doing has really paid off so far. The 80/20 rule I’m trying to follow is very beneficial. I’ve been able to focus on smaller aspects of our NodeJS instruction, instead of having to take in a very large concept at once. The thing I’ve taken away the most is templating with the mustache-express package. I’ve done most of my templating and variable passing before this week with ejs, but I had never used mustache-express before. The concepts are basically the same, so it was pretty easy to pick up. We are getting into databases soon, so that will be a lot of fun.

I’m loving The Iron Yard, and I’m both blessed and sad to be in the final cohort. We are all searching for jobs, including the staff. I’m encouraged by the feedback and interviews I’ve had so far, and I look forward to starting my career soon!
