Cooking in College (For the College Students)

What’s going on you guys, Malik here. As a College student getting ready to finish up my Senior year, I want to enlighten you with some great tips that will help you hungry, starving students to get through the week.

First I strongly recommend that you get well acquainted with your located 99 cent store only or local grocery store. That way you can purchase gift cards in advance to purchase any of the foods that you need.

It is very important that you make sure your meals are well balanced. You want to make sure that you are eating the right amounts of fruits and vegetables daily. For those that do eat meat you want to make sure you buy enough meat as well. You want to at least buy food that will last you for two weeks so on your next pay day or time off. Having enough food for two weeks will make sure that you are able to keep your food fresh.

When Going to the Grocery Store:

  1. Make sure you do not go hungry: Going to the store hungry can be one of the biggest mistakes you can make. YES! Due to your hunger, you will buy everything in sight because you will all of the sudden have a taste for everything in the store. Usually a college grocery store budget should be no where from 80–150 dollars depending on the person. You will find yourself getting more of what you want instead of focusing on the foods that you need.
  2. Buy in bulk: When buying your food make sure you buy in bulk, so you can make sure that you have enough food left over so you can make it last. Making food last is also a great money saver. There are different things you can make on Sunday to ensure you that you will have food for the week.
  3. Prep for a Meal Prep: It is very important that you have three meals daily and I understand how hard it can be to make sure you eat. Buy plastic containers which will allow you to set aside a lunch and a dinner. When it comes down to your breakfast, most college students are moving so fast that they do not have the time to cook meals.

4. Frozen Food is your Friend: When making a lunch or dinner, Frozen food is your friend. You must find it quite easy to just shake vegetables from a bag of frozen broccoli with a frozen chicken patty and put it into a container.

I personally love food but in college it is really hard to have a balanced meal. I hope that these tips help you get in the direction that will benefit you. If you are not already, follow me on Instagram @mrmalikmcmillian and on Snapchat: malikmeansking
