Is United Airlines Travel Insurance Worth Buying?

You probably spent a good deal of time and effort searching to get the right flight for your trip.

But at check-out from the United Airline’s purchase page they probably offered you a single choice of insurance.

In all probability, it is going to be expensive and not cover what you need.

Our advice, is to take a look at a Travel Insurance Marketplace, like AardvarkCompare and shop around to get the right plan for your needs at the best possible price.

It will take you less than 2 minutes to get an anonymous quote, that lets you compare and contrast what your airline or travel site is offering you.

Here’s a real example. This is United Airlines travel insurance.

The search parameters here are 1 Traveler, spending $5000 on a trip between 1st and 15th October.

This United policy will cover you if you get laid off work, but only if you have worked for your company for 3 continuous years.

United won’t cover you if your company needs you to cancel your vacation for a work reason.

This is where a Cancel for Work Reason coverage would help.

It’s not that we’re saying United’s insurance is bad, but just that it probably makes sense to spend a couple of minutes shopping around to get the best coverage for your needs, at the best possible price.

Looking at United’s coverage limits. They aren’t extensive, and the policy is not cheap. For our search parameters for just one traveler the United plan is over $480.

If we run the same quote on AardvarkCompare, the least expensive quote for the same search parameters starts at $161, but not every policy is the same. The most comparable quote from AardvarkCompare is probably the iTravelInsured Travel Lite product which comes in at $181 for the exact same quote criteria. That is $300 cheaper than the United plan, with similar coverage levels.

Comparing some of the main coverage that most travelers need.
Trip Cancellation. Trip Interruption. Medical Cover and Medical Evacuation.

The United policy covers Trip Cancellation to 100% of the trip cost. Same as the Aardvark plan.
United also covers Trip Interruption to 100% of the trip cost whereas the Aardvark plan covers 125%.

United will cover just $10k of Medical bills if you get ill whilst on vacation whereas the Aardvark plan offers $100k of medical cover.

Finally, United provides £50k of medical evacuation cover. On the Aardvark plan, $250k of medical evacuation cover is standard.

And like the United plan it also provides if you are laid off work, but unlike United where you have to have worked with your employer for 3 years, with the Aardvark plan it is only 1 year, and it also covers you if your firm need you to cancel your trip for a work reason, which the United plan does not.

Remember, of course, the price difference.
The United plan offering substantially inferior cover for $300 dollars more. And that is just on a quote for one person traveling. Now imagine you are traveling with your whole family! So, do you still want to buy your travel insurance from United?

Our advice at AardvarkCompare is before you buy a travel insurance policy from your airline or travel agent, shop around, and see how much you can save on a product that’s right for you.

Remember, insurance plans in the US are filed with your state insurance commissioner, including the price, so you can’t and won’t find the same plan cheaper anywhere else.
