Alphabet’s Google plans to reorganize much of its ad sales division, involving 30,000 employees, The Information reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Sean Downey, who is in charge of ad sales for major accounts in the Americas, reportedly said in a department-wide meeting last week that Google plans to reorganize its ad sales team, but did not specify whether the move would include layoffs.

Google did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

In January, Alphabet announced plans to lay off 12,000 employees globally, the equivalent of 6 percent of its global workforce. In early June, Google also fired employees of mapping app Waze after the app’s advertising system merged with Google Ads technology.

Google is working to transform itself into a generative AI company. The Code Red for ChatGPT had Google employees scrambling to come up with all sorts of AI features and ideas, but once the work was done and dusted, Google began to turn the tables and try to “optimize” itself with new AI solutions. To put it more bluntly, with AI on the scene, how much more “natural intelligence” does Google really need?
