For the first time in modern U.S. history, a child of a president disgraced America

Donald Trump, Jr., oldest son of President Trump, arranged meeting with Russian lawyer to dig up dirt on Hillary

Normally, I don’t like the idea of criticizing family members of the incumbent president, since family members of the president are not political figures unless they interject themselves into politics in some form.

Well, Donald Trump, Jr., the son of President Donald Trump, interjected himself into politics in a manner that completely disgraced America:

Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.

The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.

Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign.

In other words, the oldest son of then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump met with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin for the purpose of seeking politically damaging information about then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. This is the strongest publicly-known evidence so far of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Vladimir Putin regime in Russia.

There have been instances of the children of presidents doing embarrassing, and even illegal, things in the past, but I don’t know of a single prior instance of a child of a president in modern U.S. history colluding with a foreign government in an attempt to influence an election in the United States…that is, until Donald Trump, Jr. sought Russian assistance when it came to digging up dirt on Hillary.
