How a dairy farmer from rural Wisconsin could give Democrats a U.S. House majority

If there’s one congressional district that could decide control of the House, it would be the 6th Congressional District of Wisconsin

If I said that the congressional district where the Republican Party began could give the Democratic Party control of the U.S. House of Representatives, you’d probably laugh at me.

Well, the truth of the matter is that the 6th Congressional District of Wisconsin, home of the birthplace of the Republican Party, could very well decide which party controls the House after the November 2016 elections. It could also be the undoing of the Republican Party.

If you strongly dislike Donald Trump, you’ll dislike the 6th District of Wisconsin’s Republican incumbent, Glenn Grothman, even more. Grothman is every bit of a bigot as Trump is, but Grothman has gone a step further into the gutter that is modern Republican Party politics than Trump has by openly bragging about suppressing voters. Grothman has done virtually nothing for his constituents, and his style of politics is almost entirely dependent on racism, sexism, homophobia, and hyperpartisanship.

Two Democrats have filed to run against Grothman, one of which is Sarah Lloyd, a dairy farmer from rural Columbia County, Wisconsin. Sarah’s progressive policies have been shaped by her own life experiences, as well as Wisconsin’s progressive traditions that date back to the days of Robert Marion “Fighting Bob” La Follette, Sr. She’s seen first-hand how free-trade deals have negatively impacted her dairy farm, so she opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and other proposed trade deals supported by many Republicans and corporate Democrats. Lloyd believes that government should work for the people, not special interests, large corporations, or political power-brokers. The Cap Times, a Madison, Wisconsin-based newspaper, wrote an editorial about Lloyd’s campaign, which you can view here.

While most of the competitive congressional races this year are in suburban areas, that only describes part of Wisconsin’s 6th District. Wisconsin’s 6th also includes small cities like Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan, as well as rural areas where small family farms dot the landscape. In Wisconsin’s 6th, “America’s heartland” isn’t just a moniker, it’s a way of life. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is a more authentic representative of America’s heartland than Sarah Lloyd. That’s why I endorsed Lloyd’s congressional campaign.
