Ohio Supreme Court justice attacks NFL players for dodging military draft that hasn’t been active since 1973
Right-wing Justice William O’Neill calls Cleveland Browns players who knelt during national anthem “draft dodging millionaire athletes”
Right-wing Ohio Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill went on a brief Facebook rant sharply criticizing members of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns who knelt during the national anthem of a recent preseason football game. During that rant, he accused the players of dodging a U.S. military draft that has not been active since 1973:
Justice O’Neill clearly got his facts wrong, since there aren’t any active NFL players who would have been old enough to have been subjected to the Vietnam War-era military draft, which was the last time that Americans were conscripted into military service. For example, Indianapolis Colts placekicker Adam Vinateri, one of the oldest active players in the NFL, was one month old when the Vietnam War-era draft was ended by the Nixon Administration.
