Sometimes I wonder if Obama compromised way too much with the Republicans when he was first elected with a super majority of Democrats in both the Senate and Congress. After all, the individual mandate was a conservative idea endorsed by Newt Gingrich and implemented by Mitt Romney.

While Obama had the political momentum and the Democrat super majority, he should have rammed through single payer. If he was going to be faced with Republican obstructionism, why not go for it???

Any thoughts on why Obama went for the individual mandate?
