Independent Abortion Clinics Continue to Provide Care in Alabama and West Virginia

Every time a state passes a measure that would ban or severely restrict abortion, our member clinics get panicked calls from patients asking if abortion is illegal in that state.

Because of anti-abortion restrictions, coverage bans, clinic closures, and extremism, the ability to access abortion care differs widely between states and regions. But currently, abortion is legal in all 50 states.

On Tuesday, voters in Alabama and West Virginia passed anti-abortion amendment, both dangerous and cruel attempts to deny the agency and freedom of pregnant Alabamans and West Virginians. Right now, the legal protection offered by Roe v Wade means that the Alabama measure can likely not be enacted at this point, and there are still many questions about what the West Virginia measure will do.

Abortion is still legal in both Alabama and West Virginia.

Independent abortion clinics spend every penny and all of their time taking care of their patients. They love their communities and they are committed to providing care when and where others do not. You can help them out by making sure your friends and loved ones know where to find a clinic and what barriers they’ll have to navigate to get care.

Get to know and support independent abortion care providers in Alabama and West Virginia: Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives, West Alabama Women’s Center, and Women’s Health Center of West Virginia provide compassionate care in their communities.

It’s important to know about the barriers you and your neighbors face when seeking abortion care in your state. Here’s a great resource with information on all 50 states.

If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade — or chips away at it so completely that it becomes meaningless — all of this changes. For now, make sure you know where to get care and what the legal landscape looks like in your state. We hope you will share this information with everyone you know.
