Withholding Title X Funds is Discriminatory and Dangerous

Statement of Abortion Care Network on repeal of Title X protections

This month, congress voted to repeal safeguards for family planning funding, rolling back protections that would prevent states from discriminating against clinics that provide abortion. Today, President Trump signed that legislation into law. This action is discriminatory and dangerous: it could prevent Americans from accessing essential reproductive care — including birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings, and prenatal care.

By definition, weakening the Title X program will disproportionately negatively impact people living in rural areas, those without health insurance, women of color, young people, and people struggling to make ends meet.

“Everyone should be able to seek care with the provider of their choice — wherever they live, however much they earn, and however they are insured.”

In many parts of the country, Title X family planning providers — including independent abortion care providers clinics and Planned Parenthood — are the only accessible option for reproductive health care of any kind. Everyone should be able to seek care with the provider of their choice — wherever they live, however much they earn, and however they are insured. Millions of people trust and value these health care providers; they should not be barred from receiving care from those qualified centers just because they also provide abortion care.

“Playing politics with these essential health services and reducing the number of clinics providing reproductive health care is unjust and means many people may not get the health care they need.”

These rollbacks undermine the very purpose of the Title X family planning program, which is to provide expert reproductive health care to those who are struggling to make ends meet. Playing politics with these essential health services and reducing the number of clinics providing reproductive health care is unjust and means many people may not get the health care they need.
