How About Going Back From Freelancing?
Veronica Belmont I would enjoy to see a follow-up on that article discussing a potential return to a 9–5 and the struggles you may or are facing. From my POV, I notice people have a hard time going back. Not because they have to give up on the glamorous perks of being a freelancer but because of the work history gap. Of course as a freelancer you probably have built a strong portfolio, a ton of experience, gained invaluable exposure to other areas related to your work and ultimately broadened your skill-set.
But I feel that recruiters/hiring managers at the average 9–5 company might not value or cherish that. At least Thats based on my experience. I might not have been a freelancer but I’m in the middle of a career change. Moving from an education and experience in engineering to tech and computer science. I was overlooked many times because my degree or experience are not directly related to the new field I’m looking for. Even though I have products (apps) that are actually out there and being used by thousands of people, recruiters still seem put off by my background and lack of experience and seem to only focused on number of experience of experience or what programming lanaguage my resume says I know.
The biggest feedback I get is that most recruiters are still looking for outdated programming languages or 5+ years of experience working for a company in a full-time type of role.
I’m slowely beginning to see engagement though, as the number of years of experience on paper continues to grow.
Would love to hear your experience going back — assuming you are already or planning to —
