De La Soul: In Words & Pictures (Live in Sheffield 29/05/2015 O2 Academy)
Friday night was for me one of those holy grail moments. I’ve been listening to De La Soul since 88/89. I’ve been unlucky on many occasions over the years to miss out seeing them live. Well that changed on the 29th of May. It was an exceptional night for the city of Sheffield and Hip Hop. We were treated to local talents Clubs & Spades first off who set the tone for the evening something wonderful. Real live vigour and stage presence delivered with a forthright vigour. More of them on the site in the future I promise. Next up was The Renegade Brass Band. Brass has never sounded so damn funky trust me. Check them out.
Next up was the mighty Pete Rock. To be in the presence of one of the greatest producers of all time was a feeling like no other. He took us on a musical journey spanning decades of music interwoven with his on classics. Seamless DJ work was the order of the day. For his final moment he stepped from behind the decks, grabbed the mic and rocked ‘The Creator’ for a eager crowd. That ladies & gentlemen was real deal culture in your face.
When De La Soul appeared on stage it was like I’d gone full circle back to childhood. To see Plug 1 (Pos) & Plug 2 (Dave) bound on to the stage with such youthful energy was inspiring. They had the crowd jumping from the very start. All the classic staples of live hip hop were present & correct perfectly shot through with their own strong personalities. Real crowd rocking stuff. They engaged us with classics & rarities from their extensive catalogue that spans 27 plus years. I’ve not seen a live act captivate an audience like they did in such a long time. it was exciting stuff. Sadly Plug 3 aka DJ Maseo couldn’t be with them for the tour. They had with them DJ Strike as his replacement. Strike proved to be a DJ with world class skills and held it down. I would be shocked & surprised if anyone in attendence wasn’t impressed by what they saw on stage. It was an all round perfect night of Hip Hop Culture proving that good music & live performance is alive & well.
On a side note Plug 2 aka Dave borrowed my belt for the show… If you were there you’ll know what I mean.
