The encounters, experiences, and products tailored by/for every human is peculiar to their needs, we already know that. However, a lot of times we realize that the context differs from culture to culture. This is so from the food we consume, to the clothes we wear, to the products and lifestyle choices that appeal to us. Context is imbibed in every experience and moment we encounter or create, including the designs we see and fabricate.
The design experience and clientele in Nigeria is definitely different from other parts of the world. Experience here is shaped by culture, familiar stirrings, economic decisions and socio-political atmosphere — design is in turn affected by these things.
In our experience, we’ve found out that being Nigerian or living in Africa put a lot of perspective to your design, product or business. Replicating a product/design seen somewhere can pitch you for a terrible fall. And as Stephen Covey (yeah, he’s not African we know), “Priority is a function of context”, it makes a lot of sense to pool a list of people/resources that are at the intersection of Design and Africa to share with you.
These designers are not only badass, they have designed products in Africa for Africans that are awesome. so there’s always something to learn from them.
