Love your framing of how these degradations are not features, but functions that enable a good user experience in more extreme conditions. It makes me think that the more the extreme the conditions of use (low battery, low bandwidth, less space) the close you get to the core value proposition, basically triage the core interaction at the expense of frivolity.
