When Is a Right Time To Replace Your House Locks?

Keeping your home safe, and ensuring you’re able to access your property no matter what the conditions outside are or time of day are critical for any home owner. Not being able to get inside of your home, or worse, risking allowing someone else the increased ability to break-in is the last thing anyone wants. With that being said, ensuring your door locks are up to date, in good condition, and functioning properly is vital.
Many people might not realize it, but, if and when you suspect your home has been broken into, this is the perfect time to replace all of your exterior door locks. After all, once someone has broken into your home, chances are they have already mechanically damaged the inner-lock, and a locksmith might even be necessary to come out to remove and repair your locks and door. Also, for those that have roommates, or unwanted guests that have left over time which at some point or another have had a key — this would be an ideal situation to change your locks, or, have them re-keyed. Most importantly, learning how to properly identify wear, tear, and rust can save you from unwanted additional costs for a late night locksmith, or worse, having to break your door or window — which means you’ll have to pay even more for repairs.
While changing your door locks regularly isn’t fun for anyone — much like losing your keys — the truth is, you’re bound to save a lot more time, money, and give yourself peace of mind by doing so. After all, chances are your valuables inside your home are worth much more than any door lock replacement could cost. For those that have just purchased their first home or apartment, or simply have never had to do it before, just keep in mind that it’s better to be safe than sorry. And, while a lot of people may have more keys than they’d like on their keychain. if you’re forced to replace an entire keychains worth, try to prioritize each one and lock replacement per the priority of safety it holds.
Lastly, for those that frequently misplace or lose their keys, a combination key door-lock might make more sense. These types of door locks provide a system where you simply memorize and punch in a code to open up a door to your home. But, don’t fret, as most of these systems also have a spare key inside. And, while this system may sound seemingly simple or “less safe”, keep in mind the reality of how much more complicated a (physical) 4 to 6 code combination is as opposed to simply operating one, physical metal key. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to invest in an affordable CCTV system for the outside of your home (Wi-Fi-friendly). This way, you can monitor it on the go. There’s also nothing wrong with a good ‘ol fashion’ home security system. Remember, if this is your first time, or you’re simply curious and have questions, don’t hesitate to contact a licensed, trusted locksmith and have him or her generate a free quote for you and your home.
