The Domestication of Snapchat

Great post and comments, funny and very true. The story of Snapchat is amazing in that the people shaped it into what it is today. It has the same premise, but the way we use it is thanks to the mobile movement. I think it is a great example of how much power as a audience we truly have in the social construction of technology.

We have seen this in other social media, but not to the extent of Snapchat. Twitter was always meant to be short tidbits of information or statuses, but small changes keep it fresh. Same can be said about Instagram and filters and the many aspects of Facebook, but these social media examples never had to do a marketing 180 like Snapchat.

For your questions, I think everyone has a wide range of audiences that they try to curate information to. Taking your Snapchat example of vomiting rainbows to more of a Twitter outlook, I find myself curating information to multiple audiences. My followers on Twitter follow me for some reason and they are interested in something that I am saying. The people who are close to me in real life probably care more about my social updates (wedding planning, things I am doing in Chicago and pictures from around town). For those who I do not know as well, they are probably looking for my more informational updates (items dealing with DePaul volleyball or cross country/track and field and a nice mix between professional sports, e-sports and music). My connections with these people might not be as deep, but I care enough to be active. So I let Twitter shape how I am social and who I am social with on their platform, whether they are complete strangers or close family and friends.
