Start Saying No.

Last year I ran my first ultra marathon.

As result people starting asking me how I could do that in just 10 months of preparation. My response is simple : “I learned to say no.”

In order to commit to anything that is significant in time or effort you must say no to other, potentially equally significant, opportunities. For example, I denied myself the chase to participate in several Crossfit competitions, adventure races, and even road marathons because I needed to focus my attention specifically on the task at hand.

The same principle is true for work and personal projects. This article talks about why you should only pick one side project to pursue in 2016. I couldn’t agree more.

The fact is that when you say “no” to the many opportunities that you’ll inevitably be faced with after committing to a task/goal/accomplishment, you’re actually saying yes to achieving your true objective. Conversely, saying yes out of a desire to please others, or the lack of ability to commit is robbing your future of the chance to realize your dream.

“No” is a powerful word that we often associate with negativity or selfishness. The reality remains that when used correctly to organize our behaviors and free us to provide he greatest value for others, NO is the most self-less word we're equipped to use. So, go ahead- ask me to start a new project/hobby/activity.

You can probably guess my answer. :)
