Much larger than simply the FBI and CIA, the US intelligence community comprises 17 offices, with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence at the fulcrum. Established in response to the 9/11 attacks, the director of this office coordinates intelligence sharing among agencies and directly advises the president, the Homeland Security Council, and the National Security Council.
Another major agency is the National Security Agency (NSA), which was once so clandestine that it earned the nickname “No Such Agency.” The focus of the NSA is signals intelligence, which includes activities such as collecting, monitoring, and processing electronic information and deciphering secret codes. Employing many mathematical standouts, it is also tasked with ensuring that US information systems are not breached by other nations.
