PROMOTING RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE: THE ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE

God has created man in the best and perfect creation. He endowed man with the ability to think and reason which makes man superior to all other creations. Islam as one of the Abrahamic religion gives man a free will to choose his religion. It was clearly stated in the Qur’an that “Let there be no compulsion in religion…” Islam teaches freedom, cherishes it and guarantees it for the Muslims as well as the non-Muslims. The Islamic concept of freedom applies to all voluntary activities of man in all walks of life. However, there must be some limitations of one sort or another for the society to function well. Islam has strongly warned its followers from reviling others religion, “Revile not those whom they call upon beside Allah…” (Other Religions). Islam even goes further to caution its followers in terms of preaching, to preach with wisdom and peace; “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in way which are best and most Gracious..”

Based on these principles, Islam as well as other religions promotes religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence among various nations. Let’s tolerate each other so that #NOTANOTHERNIGERIAN will be involved in religion/violent extremism.
