Dear Donald Trump: Here is what we black folk have to lose
A couple days ago, amidst dismal poll numbers, Donald Trump sought to reach out to the black community (where he is polling between one and two percent) to shore up support.
There are many different ways Donald Trump could have gone about this. He could have gone to a predominately black community to give his speech. He could have met with major leaders in the black community. He could have apologized for the swaths of racially insensitive things he has said. Heck, he could have pulled into a Popeyes, eaten some fried chicken, and called it a day.
Did he do any of these things? No. Instead, he gave a speech to a predominately white crowd about the black community.
Not to us, about us.
And in the culmination of his speech, he said: “What the hell do you have to lose?”
It’s a fair question. What do we have to lose in voting for Donald Trump. Well, it turns out, we have a whole hell of a lot to lose.
What do we have to lose by voting for Donald Trump? Well, for one, we have our dignity to lose. Throwing our support behind a man who has repeatedly and openly disparaged “the blacks” is essentially telling the world that we don’t believe we matter.
What do we have to lose by voting for Donald Trump? Our voice. Donald Trump regularly criticizes the media for doing their job, and at his rallies it is a common occurrence for minorities to be thrown out for protesting — even when they support Trump.
What do we have to lose by voting for Donald Trump? Our religious rights. In a world where (1/3 of Muslims are black), voting for a man who has called for the banning of all Muslims means the banning of many black people.
What do we have to lose by voting for Donald Trump? Our political leverage. Donald Trump has yet to visit any historically black places, has turned down requests to speak at gatherings of black leaders, and holds rallies that are majority white 100% of the time.
What do we have to lose by voting for Donald Trump? Progress. Voting for a man who champions racial insensitivity and who’s voter base seems to be motivated largely by racial resentment does the opposite of what black people in America have been fighting for since the passage of the 13th amendment.
So, what the hell do we have to lose? Everything, Mr. Trump. We have everything to lose.
