Jesus was a champion of the poor, the weak, the meek, and downtrodden. He encouraged his followers to “sell their possessions” and give them to the poor. He hung out with hookers and crooks. The lifestyle of Jesus didn’t look anything like the politics of the Right.

I believe (I could be wrong) that Gandhi said something like “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians”. This reminded me of that quote and the choices that we make in interpreting a theological text. It can be used to do good or be harmful. What we choose says more about us as people than it does about the theology itself.
