The country is never going to completely come together, we’re too big and too far gone for that. I’m not advocating for getting along—400 million is simply too many people to govern under a single ideology. At some point, there will be a negotiated settlement for either stronger federalism or a series of national divorces.

I’ve been wondering at what point do we undergo some sort of cultural Civil War, a Civil War 2.0 so to speak? I do disagree that it will be a negotiated settlement of national divorces. The United States will probably divide itself up into regional areas, centered around regional political and cultural distinctiveness which never could be blended together in this “melting pot.”
