Maybe the more obvious observation is like going to a restaurant, sports pub, live concert, or going to watch any live sporting event, people aren’t going to the movies unless the film is an unique “destination” which means more people world-wide are staying home and will wait until Get Out is available via Netflix. Entertainment in general will have to adapt to a new reality of a public who wants to turn their home into their favorite sports bar, restaurant, movie complex, and/or even a virtual tourism “destination.”
This means outside the United States box office receipts will be even more important as they are more likely to go out than in USA or Canada. They’ll have wrap themselves around what kind of streaming options these neo-monastic movie patrons will go to first as their movie provider, so they may have to bow before the Netflix gods, or The Ringer’s own godfather in HBO.
I’m curious what all of this means when movie companies schedule the movies they want The Academy to consider for the Oscar® awards? Will how a movie is released becomes more important than when? I’m of the opinion that movie companies do such things to please directors and actors since the companies seem to care more about the revenue of a movie as a judgement of its popularity and quality than critical acclaim; yet that might be changing especially now that streaming data is rather difficult to get because it’s proprietary of streaming outfits such as Netflix and Hulu.
At any rate, all of this means independent films and actors and directors’ pet projects may have an easier time now to show success since how people are viewing entertainment is changing and Hollywood hasn’t adapted to the changes fully yet.
