Figure 1&2: The model of Slow House. Made by Diller Scofidio + Renfro 1991

The technique I used is a play of cones of vision and decontextualized images (DILLER AND SCOFIDIO). ‘Diller Scofidio+ Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, visual arts and the performing arts’. The name of the studio comes from the surname of three partners, and they work with a staff of architects, artists, designers and researchers.

In 1991, there is a private residence called slow house in long island, New York (figure 1&2). For slow house, it is a passage from physical entry to optical departure or simply, a door to a window. There is no front facade, only a tall narrow portal with a pivoting front door that is double height entrance, and public spaces for upper floor and private spaces for down floor. The reason why it is called slow house is that the time was slowed down in this house. One of the two pillars on the side of the window is equipped with cameras, and they can make a projection onto the screen facing the window after taking photos and videos. In this case, in summer day can show the scene of winter shooting and slow down the time. Unfortunately, it has not been built yet.

In the first and second model, it reveals the movements and passages of slow house. Two curved walls have two centres and the same ranges.

This model demonstrates the views of slow house, and clients can control view with digital screen. The last screen screened scenery can be seen through each view.

For the fourth one, there are repeating windows in the walls.

The last draft model demonstrates the structure of slow house, and with the concrete materials. From the entrance to the end can still focus on the screened scenery.

For final works, I made it for galleries and museums, because it is so especial for living and I continue to focus on the concept of slow hose, and the draft model features set to final works. On the other hand, I also made my own design. Firstly, I put two slow houses together to form a building. And then I increase the length of the passages to make it look more complete. Last but not least, except for repeating windows and the final screens, the wall structure has been changed, so that the height of the internal and external walls are different to achieve the effect of well-proportioned up and down.
