The technique I used is ‘as score produced by the chance encounter of unlikely sounds’ (John Cage). Which means the formation of the score not like the regular music with rhymes we have been listening before, and without using the classical instruments. John Cage is ‘a pioneer of indeterminacy in music, electroacoustic music, and non-standard use of musical instruments’, and he is famous for creating music with vibrant rhymes and even noisy as well as he uses ‘chance’ to decide the order of the music. Besides, John Cage also focus on presenting his music through visual art. Fontana Mix (1958) is a one of the most famous representative, which is a composition indeterminate of its performance, including Water Walk, Sounds of Venice, Aria, Theatre Piece, and WBAI. He used straight lines, graphs with different thickness, random spots and the grids to demonstrate the sound in Fontana Mix (1958), for example, the thick line represent the main tone in the score.
For my recording sound, I made six different sound from six different scenes to demonstrate a new score around UTS in city, including the percussion sound from laptop keyboard, the sound from high-heeled footwear, traffic lights, violin and the sound from tapping opal card in central station.
In this hexagonal pattern, the six sounds are arranged in chronological order. Quadrilateral on behalf of the keyboard, the sound from high-heeled shoes like separate points, and for traffic lights, there are a great deal of continuous lines after spots, the machine used for mending roads issues a continuous vibration and I demonstrate its engine as two gears, and in order to express music, I painted a staff, and finally to the central station, the passengers tap opal cards into the station and wait for the train by rails.
In addition, the lines outside the graph represent the relevance of these sounds and scenes. These sounds also demonstrate interesting and fun in details from city life.
