some things are too serious

Abby Citterman. [ What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?] “ I don’t like when people joke about suicide. Sadly, my sister was suicidal. For three years she struggled with depression. It even came to the point where she was hospitalized several times, following an attempt to take her own life. It was a hard time for her and our family. We tried supporting her but she put her walls up so high and pushed us away. It was difficult to watch her struggle and not be able to help. Now, she has her ups and downs but she’s slowly getting better. Even though it is not as pertinent to my family and me, I still do not think it is a funny thing. It shouldn’t be joked about like it means nothing. I know a lot of people who have desensitized it. And now in social media, it is such a common thing to talk about. I dont think it should be romanticized and not a sensitive topic. Because it is a sensitive topic and it is real.”
