Once all border restrictions are eliminated, the Hong Kong government intends to entice tourists back to the city by giving away 500,000 airline tickets, valued at a total of $2 billion.
Covid-19 travel restrictions have discouraged individuals from flying to Hong Kong, which has been hit hard by problems over the previous two years. As of September 26th, the city no longer requires guests to remain in quarantined hotels and has switched to a 0+3 arrival system. Tourists are still reluctant to visit the city since they would have to spend three days working and not seeing any of the sights if they came for a vacation.
The government has not yet disclosed the specifics of how the free tickets will be distributed, but media sources suggest that both holidaymakers and business travelers will benefit.
There will be 500,000 seats available on airlines including Hong Kong Express, Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong Airlines in 2020, and the Airport Authority has budgeted $2 billion to purchase them. The Airport Authority will be responsible for ticket distribution and completing airline arrangements, per the Hong Kong Tourism Board. In early 2023, the tourism board will likely launch promotional campaigns to provide the free plane tickets.
Usually a one-way flight to Hong Kong from London or the West Coast of the United States would ordinarily cost more than £500 or $1,000, and the Hong Kong government estimates that the giveaway scheme will cost HK$2 billion to run. That’s a hefty price to pay, but for a country that has seen its tourism business all but collapse in recent years owing to things like civil turmoil in 2019, a global epidemic, and one of the world’s harshest travel lockdowns, it’s certainly money well spent.
Once all local health limitations are eliminated, the Hong Kong Tourism Board plans to reveal more details about the free airline tickets and launch the campaign in early 2023. The countries in south-east Asia would be the initial recipients of the freebie.
