I went to see Georgia O’Keefe’s work in Santa Fe. I am not sure if O’Keefe herself meant for her flowers to be sexual, although they can arouse certain feelings pertaining to sexuality. Her husband was really into Freud and psychoanalysis. He and his socialite friends would interpret her work through Freud to have fun at her expense. As far as I know, they never asked her what her paintings represented. They just assumed, as everyone else did, that some of her work represented repressed sexuality.
