Words of Wisdom from 79 AD

There were several graffiti messages dotting the house of Caecilius Iucundus. One in particular has become quite famous for its timelessness and its ability to summarize the human condition so succinctly. “May those who love prosper; let them perish who cannot love; let them perish twice over who veto love.” It was also said in another way. “He who loves should live. He who cannot love should die, and he who obstructs love should die twice.”
