Reflections on a Year in Sports Journalism

While most of my New Year's Resolutions are intended to be self-reflective and private, 2016 will mark the beginning of my first foray into soccer-specific media with the launch of Crossbar Soccer Media. This is a project which came to fruition after much discussion and debate between myself, Russ McKenzie, and Jeff Krause.

We want to connect American soccer fans to the best long-form and audio content on the internet, looking far beyond the simple scoreline reporting that has become so common in sports journalism. Great journalism, like that formerly provided by Grantland before their untimely demise at the hands of ESPN, is is about more than pushing out scoreline reports and post-match analysis. As in life, there is more to your soccer club/national federation than meets the eye. Those are the stories we will seek to tell at Crossbar Soccer Media.

We wish to take up that mantle of high-quality, macro-level analysis of sport and apply it to the Beautiful Game. Barring any delays, we plan on releasing our first batch of both long form and audio content on 15 January 2016. I would like to send out a special thanks to the people who have made this possible. First and foremost, my co-founders. Second, to our inaugural crop of writers. Third, to the leadership at Last Word on Sports who gave us the opportunities at Last Word Soccer Club to succeed and grow.

I resolve that in 2016, rather than continuing to admonish the media for leaving stories untold, we will instead put out into the Universe what we wish to see. We hope you'll join us on this journey by following Crossbar Soccer on Medium, Facebook, and Twitter.
